"Social and emotional learning (SEL) involves the processes through
which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge,
attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set
and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish
and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Since 1994, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has been the world’s leading organization to advance the science and evidence-based practice of SEL. CASEL has identified five interrelated sets of cognitive, affective, and behavioral competencies (see graphic).
SEL is a proven strategy that is endorsed by teachers across the country. Yet too few schools and far fewer school systems are adopting
explicit evidence-based SEL strategies or integrating evidence- based SEL
approaches — both of which are needed. SEL has been underutilized
for too long. Our lack of action inhibits students across the country
from fully realizing their potential as knowledgeable, caring, responsible, and contributing individuals.

to ensure our students and teachers are equipped with the knowledge and
skills they need to be successful in school, work, and life." *

This is an innovative art-based, hands-on curriculum that teaches social and emotional learning and essential social values like kindness and compassion, and important life skills such as conflict resolution and analytical thinking. More than 45,000 students have participated in 29 Pieces Education (formally known as MasterPEACE).
